GESI NEWS: (COVID-19) Dr. Mena & Friends Donates to Bakassi Returnees Living in Bayelsa
Bakassi Returnees (Bayelsa State Chapter) Appreciate Dr. Mena&Friends for Reaching Out to them in this Trying Time.
Dr.
Mena&friends is a charity organization with a passion for caring for the vulnerable
in the society. Dr. Mena who is the founder of this organization is a University
of Port Harcourt trained Medical Doctor. She currently works as a Pediatrician
at Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa. She is also a prolific writer, who has
written several articles in magazines to educate the public on child health
related issues.
As against the prediction of Milinda
Gates, wife of the Co-founder of Microsoft and one of the world’s richest men, Bill
Gates, who predicted that the streets of Africa will be littered with dead
bodies when the coronavirus eventually spreads to Africa. Dr. Mena&friends Foundation
stood to falsify this statement by going all out to make sure that the virus
does not spread beyond control. She has also in her personal effort, organized
public awareness campaigns to enlighten the public on ways to prevent the
spread of the virus, while also donating relief items to the most affected in
the society.
Bakassi camp is one of their major tag audiences;
they want to the camp almost every week with already cooked food (fried rice,
chicken cakes and fruits) for the children. They feed over 300 children every
week. The programme was tagged “Sunday rice" And they also shared raw food
stuffs to the elderly (rice garri, beans etc).
Mena&friends, carried out voluntary
counseling and testing for HIV for the pregnant women, distributed face masks,
insecticides, mosquito treated nets, clothing and shoes to parents and children
recently.
In conjunction with Medical women association
of Nigeria, Bayelsa State branch, they were able to celebrate the 2020 Children's
Day at the Bakassi Camp, giving the kids a sense of belonging, while assuring
them that the future belongs to them.
Mena&friends Foundation have
outlined projects aimed at repairing a makeshift school where the camp children
learn under voluntary teachers, so that when the rains come pouring; the
children will be protected
According to Dr. Mena some persons in
the Camp have approached her on the need to establish an Adult Learning Centre
to help educate the elderly people who have interest in learning how to read
and write and she has added this to her pet projects, saying she will take it
seriously as soon as things normalize.
